Ambien, in its generic form and also known as Zolpidem Tartrate is a medication used as a treatment for sleeplessness- insomnia. This medication is FDA approved and is non-narcotic in nature. It is used to help a user control their pattern of sleeping and is found in a 10mg dose. Ambien effects last for six to seven hours.


 Use this medication is a sedative, you are advised not to take the medication during work hours. The medication may sometimes cause different reactions on different patients using it. Some of the different side effects that are known to be caused by Ambien are like: tongue, lips and throat swelling and difficulty in breathing. To fully experience and enjoy the effects of Ambien, you are advised to take the medicine when you have 6 to 8 uninterrupted hours of sleep.

Over dependence on the drug may lead to a habit. If usage is abruptly halted, it may lead to withdrawal of a patient. Some of the symptoms that may occur when this happens are like: flushing, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, it may also lead to stomach cramps and lack of sleep- known as rebound insomnia- and which secedes within 2 or so nights.


The medicine is orally ingested and comes in the form of a pill. As its fast acting, it is recommended you swallow a pill before having a meal and jumping into bed. This way, food will not slow down its effective takeover and you get sleep faster.


When it comes to Ambien usage, there are two major factors that are considered- the patients medical history and the age. The standard dosage recommended is 10mg just before sleep. This prescription may be decreased due to different but necessary situations. For patients that are elderly or suffer hepatic insufficiency, their body acceptance of the medication may be dire in higher concentrations. For such patients, the initial dosage usage of 5mg is prescribed. This medication is not commended for persons under 18years.


Alcohol is a drug that you are advised to avoid when under this medication. Since alcohol increases have sedative aspects it increases the effects of the medication. There are medications that interact with Ambien and that may have adverse effects on the user. These are Ketoconazole, Fluconazole, Chlorpromazine, Rifampicin, Ritonavir, Cimetidine and Imipramine. Note that the drugs chlorpromazine and the other, Imipramine may reduce awareness in a patient under Ambien. If you are under any of the medications listed, you are advised to seek medical attention before using Ambien.
